Neighbors walking and talking together on an Acquaint Walk

Acquaint Walks

Getting Walks Started in Your Community

A simple starter guide for getting people walking together where you live.

A note from Alex & Katherine

Hi there — and thank you for wanting to get your community walking. We want to be upfront: Walks is very early. Our vision is a world where walking together is a normal, joyful part of everyday life — where neighbors of every age and background have an easy, welcoming way to get outside, move, and get to know one another.

Right now we’re actively developing strategies in King County, WA to get the whole community walking together. As we learn what works, we’ll be sure to share our notes with you. And if there’s any way we can help grow the walking community where you are, please let us know.

Start small — just you and a buddy

We recommend a regular weekly walk with a buddy. Some weeks it may be just the two of you, and that is completely fine. Showing up consistently is what matters — it lets other people know you’re out there, and that’s how a walk takes root.

  • Pick one day and time each week and stick to it.
  • Invite one friend to be your walking buddy.
  • Show up even if it’s just the two of you — consistency builds the habit.

Ready to grow? Spread the word

If you really want your walk to grow, you can go all out with inviting people. We’re still figuring this out ourselves, but here are the channels that work well for getting the word out:

Community organizations

Neighborhood groups, libraries, and clubs.

Faith organizations

Churches, temples, mosques, and other congregations.

Family & friends

The easiest place to start, and they often bring others.

YMCAs & rec centers

Great for reaching people already interested in being active.

Companies & workplaces

Share walks with your co-workers or your organization’s leadership.

If everyone proposes or joins a walk weekly, everyone can walk together — so encourage others to propose their own.

Share your walk online

Take pictures of your walk, tag your community, and tag @the_acquainters — this helps us grow walking communities everywhere.
